Herbert Marshall McLuhan<\/b>, CC<\/a> (July 21, 1911\u00a0\u2013 December 31, 1980) was a Canadian professor, philosopher, and public intellectual<\/a>. His work is viewed as one of the cornerstones of the study of media theory<\/a>, as well as having practical applications in the advertising and television industries.\u00a0He was educated at the University of Manitoba\u00a0<\/a>and the University of Cambridge<\/a>; he began his teaching career as a Professor of English at several universities in the U.S. and Canada before moving to the University of Toronto<\/a>, where he remained for the rest of his life.<\/p>\n

Marshall McLuhan’s contribution to Media<\/a> and Communication is quite significant and he’s widely acknowledged for it. Among most of the books written by him, the famous one was\u00a0“Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man<\/a><\/span>,” is considered a pioneering study in media theory.<\/p>\n

In it, he suggests that the medium, and not its content, affects society mainly by its characteristics \u00a0— summarized by McLuhan’s well-known phrase “the medium is the message<\/a>.” And he also acted in\u00a0Woody Allen’s 1977 movie “Annie Hall<\/a>.” An academic arguing with Allen while in line outside a movie theater is silenced by McLuhan’s sudden appearance. He then delivers the line, “You know nothing of my work.” Which is quite true even at this point!<\/p>\n
