When you file an RTI, waiting endlessly for a reply can be frustrating. But do you know that the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005<\/a> mandates a strict reply time limit for every public authority?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s break down the RTI reply deadlines<\/a>, what to do if the reply is delayed, and how you can take action confidently \u2014 with or without disclosing your identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

RTI Reply Time Limit As Per Law<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Here are the official RTI reply timelines:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

RTI by citizens below poverty line (BPL)<\/strong><\/td>30 days<\/strong> (No fee required)<\/td><\/tr>
First Appeal<\/strong> under RTI<\/td>30 days<\/strong> from RTI response or 45 days from RTI filing date<\/td><\/tr>

Note: If the PIO fails to reply within the time frame, it is treated as a refusal, and you can file a First Appeal.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

What Happens If RTI Reply Is Not Received in Time?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If no reply is received within the RTI reply time limit:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. File a First Appeal within 30 day<\/a>s to the First Appellate Authority (FAA).<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. If the FAA also doesn\u2019t respond, file a Second Appeal with the Central or State Information Commission.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. You can also request a penalty or disciplinary action on the PIO for delay under Section 20 of the RTI Act.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
