Rukhmabai Raut was one of the first female opted for Medicine apart from\u00a0Anandibai Joshi,\u00a0Kadambini\u00a0Ganguly\u00a0and Chandramukhi Basu<\/a>. She was on\u00a0November 22, 1864, in a Maharashtrian (Marathi) family to Janardhan Pandurang and Jayantibai who came from a community of carpenters (Sutars). She was one of the bold and progressive women of that time.<\/p>\n

She was famously known for her stand towards legal separation (then divorce) and love for higher studies in medicine.\u00a0She was also at the heart of a landmark legal case which led to the enactment of the\u00a0Age of Consent Act, 1891.<\/p>\n

  1. Rukhmabai was\u00a0a victim of child marriage<\/span> as she was married at the age of 11 to 19-year-old Groom<\/strong><\/em> Dadaji Bhikaji after her father died when she was just 8 years old.<\/li>\n
  2. Rukhmabai’s Mother\u00a0Jayantibai transferred her property to Rukhmabai who was only eight<\/strong><\/em> and she remarried after her daughter’s marriage to\u00a0Dr. Sakharam Arjun, and the step-father supported Rukhmabai at every step.<\/li>\n
  3. She refused to live with her husband and maternal-in-laws<\/strong><\/em> who were after her property she inherited from his deceased father.<\/li>\n
  4. She fought a long legal case against her husband after marriage and won the case. This judgment was also criticized by Bal Gangadhar Tilak and other prominent Hindu leaders.<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n
  5. \u00a0Rukhmabai wrote numerous letters in the newspapers under the pseudonym\u00a0A Hindu Lady\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>particularly the Times of India, which stirred the support and public sentiments in her favor<\/span>.<\/li>\n
  6. A fund was created to support her travel and study in England<\/span> at the London School of Medicine for the 5 years degree course.<\/li>\n
  7. \u00a0Rukhmabai returned to India in 1894 and joined a hospital in Surat as the\u00a0First practicing female doctor in India<\/strong><\/em>, where she\u00a0served as the chief medical officer for\u00a035 long years. She retired around 1930, and eventually, breathed\u00a0her last in 1955, at the age of 91.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
