She was on\u00a0November 22, 1864, in a Maharashtrian (Marathi) family to Janardhan Pandurang and Jayantibai who came from a community of carpenters (Sutars). This judgment was also criticized by <em><strong>Bal Gangadhar Tilak and other prominent Hindu leaders.<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Rukhmabai wrote numerous letters in the newspapers under the pseudonym\u00a0<strong><em>A Hindu Lady\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>particularly the Times of India, which <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">stirred the support and public sentiments in her favor<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li>A <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">fund was created to support her travel and study in England<\/span> at the London School of Medicine for the 5 years degree course.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Rukhmabai returned to India in 1894 and joined a hospital in Surat <em><strong>as the\u00a0First practicing female doctor in India<\/strong><\/em>, where she\u00a0served as the chief medical officer for\u00a035 long years.
