His father was a minister. At the age of six, he attended a Marathi school in Kolhapur and was later transferred to an English school in 1851. During his 7 years as a judge in Bombay (now Mumbai) he worked for social reform in the areas of <em><u>child marriage, widow remarriage, and women\u2019s rights<\/u><\/em>. In 1884, he was elected as the Judge of the Poona Small Causes Court. He became a member of the Bombay High Court in 1893.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1885, he also helped in the formation of the<em> Indian National Congress Party<\/em>, which essayed a major role in the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biographyonline.net\/indian-independence-movement\/\">Independence Movement of India<\/a><\/em>. His noticeable work included books on Indian economics and on Maratha history which includes <em>\u2018Rise of the Maratha Power<\/em><strong><em>&#8216;<\/em><\/strong> (1900). He served as dean of arts at the Bombay University and encouraged the translation of English into vernacular languages into the university curriculum.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>How Ranade\u2019s work influenced India in that reformation era?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2547\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2547\" style=\"width: 467px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rtiwala.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Ranade.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2547\" src=\"https:\/\/rtiwala.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Ranade.jpg\" alt=\"RTIwala Explains MG Ranade contributions to Indian society\" width=\"467\" height=\"350\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2547\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Image Source: Wikimedia)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ranade has been called the <strong><em>father of Indian economics<\/em><\/strong> for urging (unsuccessfully) the <a href=\"https:\/\/rtiwala.com\/national-youth-day\/#.WmJvwaiWbIU\">British Government<\/a> to initiate industrialization and state welfare programs. He was an early member of the <strong><em>Prarthana Samaj<\/em><\/strong> (\u201cPrayer Society\u201d), a Hindu movement inspired by the Brahmo Samaj, advocating principles of the ancient Vedas. He also established the <a href=\"https:\/\/rtiwala.com\/remembering-o-p-nayyar\/\"><em>Social Conference movement<\/em>,<\/a> which worked against child marriages, the shaving of widows&#8217; heads, and spending heavily on marriages and other social functions.
