How to file an RTI Application.

Step 1

Take a blank paper or you can also download RTI Templates from here(click here) which includes all the required Acts & Sections of RTI Act 2005.

Step 2

Write your name and address, including pin code on the top left, followed by the designation as "APIO/PIO" then the name and address of the Central/State Government department. If you don't know then search on the web.

Step 3

Add a subject line "Request under the Right to Information Act" in the middle and then date after that. Now write Under the Right to Information Act 2005, Section 6, please provide me the following information (here, clearly describe the information you require in point form and the period to which it relates.).

Step 4

Here clearly mention or tick there preferred way to receive the information, as in the form: (Xerox copy / printout /diskette / floppy / tape / videocassette / certified copies of documents or records/certified samples of material/ I would like to take notes or extracts) by post /email/in person. And you can also inspect the records.

Step 5

For payment, you can write or tick. The Initial request fee under Section 6(1): Rs............. paid in cash/cheque/banker's draft/Indian Postal Order/treasury Challan (give details). OR Write I am a person below the poverty line. (Attach a photocopy of the proof). 1 need not pay fees.

Step 6

Take a xerox copy of your RTI application and IPO or money order with it. As it may help you in filing First Appeal in case, if you will not get a reply of your RTI. After that, send the application by Registered/Ordinary post of Indian Post or by courier. You can also submit it to PIO by hand. Please keep receipts with you.
