RTIwala Explains P.V. Sindhu: Indian Badminton player P.V. Sindhu has been nominated for the prestigious Padma Bhushan award by the Sports Ministry. P.V. Sindhu became the second athlete after former Indian cricket team skipper MS Dhoni to be nominated for the award this year.
P.V. Sindhu: World’s No. 2 for Padma Bhushan?
After being honored by the Padma Shri back in 2015, the Indian Sports committee has confirmed the nomination of shuttler P.V.Sindhu in a New York minute. World No. 2 Sindhu has been in stellar form since winning a silver medal at Rio Olympics last year and is the second athlete after cricketer M.S. Dhoni to have been nominated for the honor this year. Sindhu, who was also a silver medalist at the World Badminton Championships last month, recently beat Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara 22-20, 11-21, 21-18 to become the first Indian shuttler to clinch the Korea Open Super Series title.

Last week, she had jumped two places to the second spot in the Badminton World Federation women’s singles rankings. The Hyderabad-based shuttler was conferred the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, the highest sporting honor in India in 2016. Last year, P.V. Sindhu created history by becoming the first Indian shuttler to win an Olympic silver medal as she went down fighting against Carolina Marin in the gold medal match.
P.V. Sindhu: The Dawn of Indian Women in Sports

P.V. Sindhu: The Star Coach
Sindhu, an Arjuna Awardee from 2013, joins Saina Nehwal and national team coach Pullela Gopichand to become the third shuttler to be conferred the Padma Bhushan.

Pullela Gopichand, the Dronacharya awardee, and the star coach of India who brought the much necessary revolution in the predicament of Indian Badminton. The man who pulled out the elite and made them compete amidst the best, and made them beat the best. Elite shuttlers, Saina Nehwal, P.V.Sindhu and Kidambi Srikant, all of them excelled under the guidance of one man Pullela Gopichand.

“Very happy that my name has been recommended for Padma Bhushan. I would like to thank the govt and the sports ministry,” Sindhu was quoted as saying by ANI. For Sindhu, the honor adds to the illustrious awards she has already picked up this season. The 22-year old shuttler has been in great form, winning the silver medal at the World Badminton Championship in Glasgow this year besides clinching the India Open Super Series and Syed Modi International.
