RTIwala Trending: During the third ODI between India and New Zealand, Indian Captain Virat Kohli became the fastest batsman to score 9,000 runs in ODIs. He achieved this pinnacle during the series-deciding third game. In the entire scenario, the 28-year-old batsman broke the record that South Africa’s AB de Villiers claimed earlier in the year, against the same opponents. He got to the milestone in his 194th ODI innings.
It is 11 innings fewer than what his Royal Challengers Bangalore teammate, De Villiers took to reach the milestone. The 28-year-old young Indian player now holds the record for being the fastest to 8,000 and 9,000 ODI runs. Overall, Kohli, who played his 202nd match, has become the 19th batsman to breach the 9,000-run mark. Kohli got to the landmark in the 37th over when he guided one off Grandhomme towards the third man for a four.

That is not the only world record that he broke during his innings. Rahul Dravid previously held the record for being the quickest to get to 9,000 runs from ODI debut. He was also the only player to have got to the mark within a decade of his debut. However, Kohli broke Dravid’s record of 9 years and 322 days with his mesmerizing performance.
He also became only the second player to have breached the mark inside a decade from ODI debut. AB de Villiers claimed the record in 2017. Coincidentally, also against New Zealand, breaking the record of 228 innings set by Sourav Ganguly, which stood for over 13 years. However, his record didn’t even last a year. The Magic Man Kohli not only broke the record but also became the first batsman to breach the 9,000 marks inside 200 ODI innings.

The Indian captain also scored his 32nd century during the match. He is second after Sachin Tendulkar (49) in the all-time list of most ODI centuries. In the third ODI, he also brought up his 32nd ODI century and his sixth ODI century of the calendar year, which is more than any other batsman.
What statistics speak for Virat Kohli
Mahendra Singh Dhoni had reached the 9,000-run milestone last year. The other Indians who have done so are Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and Mohammad Azharuddin. Earlier in the series, the Indian captain had surpassed Australian great cricketer Ricky Ponting on the list of most ODI hundreds with his 31st century. In 2016, he averaged 74.83 in ODIs. With a series against Sri Lanka to go, Kohli has already amassed nearly 1,500 runs in 2017.

Kohli had a quiet series against the Australians by his standards but he is back to his best against the Black Caps. It would be interesting to see further, what the Indian Captain has in-house for the Team and his country.
