How the National Youth Day came into existence?
On January 12 in 1984, the Government of India declared as a ‘National Youth Day’ as it was on the birthday of Swami Vivekananda. Swami Ji who was a Hindu monk and a chief disciple of Ramakrishna in the 19th century. He was a key figure in India for his beliefs and ideologies on the revival of Hinduism in the country. He spread his philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga in the Western world and the concept of nationalism in colonial India. The government of India believed that ‘the philosophy of Swamiji and the ideals for which he lived and worked could be a great source of inspiration for the Indian Youth’. The event is thus celebrated every year since 1984 in India.

How is the National Youth Day celebrated across the country?
The Yuva Diwas is celebrated all over India at school and colleges, and there are many activities performed. Debates on Swamiji’s lectures and writings, speeches, recitation, youth conventions, and seminars are being conducted. Swamiji’s belief in spiritual tradition also included Yogasanas which are performed to let oneself always motivated and inspired by the opportunities. These kinds of activities helped to boost many organizations, study circles and service projects involving the youngsters.
