Who was Rober Koch (short biography)?
Robert Heinrich Hermann Koch was a prominent German physician and microbiologist who was born on 11 December 1843. He was an autodidact as with the aid of the newspapers, he taught himself how to read. Just after three semesters, he left life science to study medicine and attended to the University of Gottingen, where he became influenced by Jacob Henle, a professor at the university who posited that infectious diseases were caused by living, parasitic organisms.

After a lengthy period of study, he graduated medical school in 1866. His life then took an unexpected turn when the Franco-Prussian War broke out in 1870. Koch served as a surgeon during the fierce fighting and following the war’s conclusion, went to work for the Imperial Department of Health. It was here he developed the technique for growing bacteria, which would prove a vital contribution to microbiology and the study of deadly disease.

Koch experimented with potato slices until his assistant, Julius Petri, invented the Petri dish (also depicted in the Doodle, and bearing Koch’s image).
